TIPS FOR SPRING/SUMMER 2008

Be on the look out for short dresses with floral prints as seen from Balenciaga, Stella McCartney, Missoni, Dolce & Gabbana and Dries Van Noten as well as art inspired prints, polka dots, stripes and star detailing like the pieces on display at the Yves Saint Laurent, Pucci and Chanel runway shows. Also linear and geometric shapes as per Fendi’s offerings.

Hippie dresses are in as evidenced from Dolce & Gabbana, Etro, Cavalli and Pucci. Look for ethnic details, embroidery and embellishment as well as wood cut ikat prints. Sequins and ruffles are also hot. Very popular too are soft and flimsy chiffon and organza type sheath dresses.

The androgynous look has followed through from fall/winter to spring/summer, imagine jacket suits with more softly structured lines but with angled shoulders, a nipped in waist line and slimly tapered trousers.

As for colours, besides the season’s top choices of purple, yellow, fuchsia and coral shades it’s all about neutral palettes like the classic black and white with splashes of uber bright colours like lime green, hot pink, red, orange and electric blue. Also look for bright rainbow colours.

If you’re not comfortable wearing bright colours or florals but still want to keep abreast with this season’s trends then opt for basic dresses teamed with geometrically shaped waist belts or skinny waist belts which are all the hype. Also you could try incorporating colourful, sequined or nature inspired brooches like that of leaves, insects or sea animals. A colourful handbag or accessory will also do wonders in transforming a nondescript outfit into a summery one.

When it comes to accessories this season’s picks are big bows, cocktail rings, row upon row of chunky bracelets adorned with semi precious stones and serpent inspired bangles. Check this out at Passion Hair Salon, from David Gan’s collection.

Bags are all about colours like aqua, peony and violet as showcased by Louis Vuitton, Fendi and Balenciaga. This season’s must have bags are the Chanel mini wrist bag, the Chanel sequin summer night tote, Prada’s vertically striped hobo in gold and black and the Roger Vivier patent clutch.

As for shoes, what’s simmering this season are shoes with unorthodox heels like that of the collections from Marc Jacobs, Prada, Chloe and Mui Mui. Gladiator styled sandals are also all the rage this season like Balenciaga’s multicoloured gladiator sandals, Burberry’s gladiator espadrilles and Givenchy strappy stiletto boots.
